good skills in parenting

frequently, my mom would ask me to go do chores. However, it isn't asked like a normal question would be. She would be like "Jess, want to get the laundry for me?" That way I have no choice but to answer, "yeah sure" On one hand, it's like why don't you just tell me instead of asking? On the other, it's nice of her to ask, instead of barking out orders. I think this is a good parenting skill that she developed while raising my sister and I.

  1. There are a lot of times that I request my son to do something...and there really is no option of saying "no". I try really hard to let him know that saying "I don't feel like doing that" is an option, but I also make it clear that not wanting to do something/not feeling like doing something isn't always an option in life. And a lot of times I try to do something like, "Would you like to help mommy by picking up trash in the living room, or finding all the laundry in living room?" (hubby is notorious about both finding their way to the floor which I don't get at all makes me crazy. So not doing something isn't an option, but he gets to choose what he does do...so he feels in control. Its just not always an option to give options though...
